800th Anniversary of My Hometown Middelburg (Ep. 1) - Introduction
In celebration of the 800th anniversary of my hometown, I will be posting a short series that will tell you everything about it. In this first post, I would like to give you a first impression about the city of Middelburg.
Middelburg is the region capital of the Dutch province of Zeeland (that's why New Zealand is new). It is a fairly small town with around 45,000 residents. It officially became a city in the year 1217, and so this year is its 800th birthday!
The city is located in the province of Zeeland, in the South West of the Nederlands. Zeeland was one of the first regions to form the Netherlands as we know it today. We are the most sober people in the country (yes, even more than other Dutchies) and we have a funny dialect that nobody can understand very well. There aren't any larger cities close to Middelburg, so everything is small-scale. In the summer, however, the place is packed with German tourists. The small towns in the region and the beaches make it a real tourist hotspot.

Middelburg is a city full of history, which you can see immediately
It has beautiful architecture, most of which originates from the Dutch Golden Age and before. The large tower is our 'Lange Jan', or Long John. It is the bell tower of the old monastery. Then there is the 'Oostkerk', or East Church. It is the largest church in the city. Another important monument is the old town hall, which stands in front of the main market square.

In the next episodes, I will address all important aspects of the city, as well as its history and its surroundings in more detail.
It is quite a long time ago I was in Middelburg, but it indeed is a very nice town! Thanks for sharing.
