The story of how the girl won the Olympic Games and did not find out about it

in #history7 years ago (edited)

In 1900, the first Olympic Games took place in Paris, for which women were allowed to participate. Among the women's competitions were declared swimmers on yachts, tennis and golf.
Olympic gold medalist was 24-year-old American Margaret Yves Abbott. The games of 1900 were organized badly, so the athletes often did not know that they were participating in the Olympic competitions. This is exactly what happened with Margaret.
She came to Paris to study the art of Degas and Rodin. To relax a little, Margaret decided to play golf - especially since at that time just passed some competitions. The girl was not told that she was participating in the Olympic Games.

Margaret won the tournament, got a champion porcelain cup from the hands of the judges (at that time the gold medals were not given to the Olympians yet), and safely departed to her homeland - in the USA.
Only 60 years later, when Margaret was already dead, it turned out that the tournament she won was part of the Olympic program of 1900.
Together with Margaret in the competition for golf involved and her mother, Mary Abbott. In the same tournament she won the seventh place. This was the first and only time when both the mother and the daughter participated in the Olympic competitions. In addition to Margaret and Mary Abbott, nine more women participated in the 1900 Olympics.
