"Erected to the memories of the heroes... who fell fighting for white supremacy" THIS is a memorial that should actually be torn down

in #history7 years ago (edited)

In the small town of Colfax Louisiana, a "riot" took place many years ago. The Colfax slave owners would not release their slaves despite losing the war. So the slaves organized and fought for their freedom. For three days, the slaves held the courthouse and started rewriting the laws of the town. The white supremacists then took arms and even had a cannon sent down the Mississippi to kill all who opposed their way of life... and that's exactly what they did. They killed 150 men who wanted nothing more than their freedom. This memorial still stands to this day. Its a disgrace to the town and all of its citizens. I don't actually care about statues or memorials but if there was ever one we should care about, shouldn't it be this one?!

The memorial reads...

"Erected to the memory of the heroes, Stephen Decatur, James Westhadnot, and Sidney Harris, who fell in the Colfax riot, fighting for white supremacy"
