The Lost Adams - 10
In 1888, the Tenney ranch near St John, Arizona received some unexpected company. About 15 miles from the New Mexico border, near the Datil Mountains, the Tenney's didn't get too many visitors. Nevertheless, when two wagons pulled up one day, the ranchers allowed the driver and his family to camp out for a few days, along with their horses, around 20 cows, and an Indian farmhand - a relation of his Native wife.
Datil Mountains, New Mexico.
This man turned out to be John Brewer, alive and well after 20-odd years. Over the next day, he told his story of seeking the hidden canyon, finding the gold, leading the supply party to Fort Wingate, and the ambush that awaited them on their return to the canyon. He even wrote up a manuscript of the events for his astounded hosts.
After Brewer and his men had approached the entrance to the zig-zag canyon on their way back to camp with supplies, they were surprised by angry Apache warriors bearing down on all sides. Brewer was shot through the leg with an arrow almost before he knew what had happened, and fell off his horse, dropping his rifle in the process.
