What Is The Feast Of The Ascension?

The Feast of the Ascension of Jesus Christ, also known as Holy Thursday or Ascension Day, marks forty days since the Resurrection on Easter Sunday and is one of the ecumenical feasts of the Christian calendar, alongside the Passion, Easter, Pentecost and Christmas.

Originally part of Pentecost (the fiftieth day), which celebrates the coming of the Holy Spirit, The Feast of the Ascension celebrates the day that Jesus ascended from Earth to be exalted, meaning that he took his seat at the right hand of God in Heaven.

Jesus led the apostles to Bethany on the Mount of Olives, whereupon he instructed them to wait in Jerusalem for the coming of the Holy Spirit. A cloud then took Jesus upward from sight, and two men in white appeared to tell them that He would one day return from Heaven in the same way.

Ten days later, the apostles were celebrating the Shavuot harvest festival when the Holy Spirit descended upon them and they began speaking in foreign tongues. This direct experience prompted around 3000 people to be baptised that very day, now known as Whitsunday, and the Christian church was born.
