Horizon radar "Duga" in the USSR

in #history7 years ago

"Duga" is a radar station for the early warning of intercontinental missile strikes. In all of the Soviet Union there were only 3 such stations (Pripyat, Komsomolsk-on-Amur and Nikolaev), they provided the possibility of finding targets at a distance of up to 3 thousand km. With the help of the "Douga" the military could literally glance beyond the horizon and detect the launch of missiles in the US.

For a long time this object was shrouded in legends: there were rumors that it was a center for the study of psychotronic weapons. There fear was reasonable - when the system was started, it blocked the possibility of using the short-wave range all over the world. It is believed that the station is completely dismantled, but who knows?
