Ruins of an old mill
In the woods near the C&O canal lie the ruins of an old mill. This is what is left of the Seneca Stonecutting mill.
The mill operated between 1868 and 1901 and cut local red sandstone quarried nearby at Seneca Quarry. The stone that built the Smithsonian Castle came from this quarry.
There isn't much left of the mill, the roof is totally gone and the walls have started collapsing. There is also a lot of graffiti on the walls. In a few places there are remnants of the original timbers.
