Michael Joseph Jackson1 2 (Gary, Indiana, August 29, 1958-Los Angeles, California, June 25, 2009) was an American singer, songwriter, record producer, dancer, actor and philanthropist.3 4 5 Called the «King of Pop», his contributions to music, dance and fashion, 8 9 together with his publicized personal life made him a world figure in popular culture for more than four decades. Aspects of Jackson's personal life, including his changing appearance, personal relationships and behavior, generated controversy. In 1993, he was charged with child sexual abuse, but the civil case was settled out of court for an undisclosed amount and no formal charges were filed.23 In 2005, he was tried and acquitted of new allegations of child sexual abuse and several other charges after the jury found him innocent on all counts. As he prepared for his return concert series, This Is It, Jackson died of acute poisoning from propofol and benzodiazepine on June 25, 2009, after suffering a cardiac arrest.24 The Los Angeles County colonel ruled that his death was a homicide, and his personal physician, Conrad Murray, was found guilty of involuntary manslaughter.
