Instituted by King George V1, on 24 Sep 1940
Awarded to Civilians and service personnel while not in action.
Awarded for acts of bravery which did not merit the award of
The George Cross
Replaced in the New Zealand award system by the
New Zealand Bravery Star.
Description
The Medal is of Silver.
The Obverse bears the crowned Effigy of his Majesty
surrounded by the inscription
“GEORGIUS VI D.G. BR.OMN. REX, ET INDIAE IMP”
The Reverse depicts St George slaying the Dragon
on the coast of England.
It was modelled and adapted by
Mr George Kruger Gray OBE, ARCA, FSA.
After the bookplate designed by
Mr Stephen Goodend ARA.
For the Royal Library, Winsor Castle.
The design is circumscribed,
“THE GEORGE MEDAL”
It is awarded for gallantry
“Not In The Face Of The Enemy”
Where the services were not so outstanding as to
merit the George Cross.
