The Air Force Medal, AFM,
Instituted on 3rd June 1918, by King George V, awarded to
non commissioned officers and men of the Air Force for
“displaying courage and devotion to duty while flying on
operations which were not active against an enemy”.
In 1999 the award was replaced by the New Zealand Bravery Decoration.
Description
The Medal is of Oval shape.
The Obverse bears a bareheaded Effigy of the Reigning Monarch
The Reverse shows Hermes [facing right] mounted on a Hawk
in flight and bestowing a wreath.
All contained within a Laurel wreath.
The Date 1918 appears behind Hermes.
The Medal is suspended by a bomb, with two wings.
The Ribbon is 32mm wide, with alternate Red and White stripes
of 2mm leaning at an angle of 45 degrees to the Left
