The purpose of the experiment, which was conducted in the 1940s, was the breeding of a breed of people who do not need sleep and who can work day and night. The political prisoners of the Gulag, who had very long terms, offered a bargain: for participation in the experiment they will be released. It took one month without sleep.

How was the experiment on sleep deprivation
Five prisoners participated in the experiment. At first they were only happy to be able to lie and read in a comfortable environment. Their chamber was airtight, there was constantly pumped a stimulant gas, which did not allow to fall asleep. With the help of devices, constant monitoring of the gas concentration was provided, since in high doses it was very toxic. Tracking subjects was provided with cameras and double-sided mirrors. Each of the prisoners had a microphone, through which they had the opportunity to communicate with observers. In the early days, all these tracking systems did not interfere with the experimental people and did not even attract their attention.

On the fifth day, the subjects showed signs of irritation and stress. They chaotically wandered around the cell, muttered something, and periodically began to complain quietly about their cellmates in microphones.

On the ninth day, wandering around the cell turned into general throwing and hysteria.

On the 14th day, prisoners began to go crazy. They then howled and cried. One of them decided to get rid of the surveillance system and carefully smeared all the mirrors with his feces. Since then, observers have only heard prisoners, but no one dared to enter them. Then suddenly there was silence. The level of oxygen consumption was high, as if the subjects were engaged in physical education.

Researchers appealed to the prisoners through the speakers that now they will enter to check the microphones and ordering to lie down on the floor, promising that one will be released. The answer was: "We no longer need freedom."

Intrigued observers withdrew gas from the cell and opened the doors. Their eyes appeared terrible picture. Five-day food reserves were intact. Three bloodied guinea pigs begged to close the doors and gas again. They had their stomachs torn, and apparently, for the past five days they were eating themselves. The body of the fourth was torn to pieces, and the fifth was sitting in a corner, swarming in his torn abdomen and from time to time eating something from there. Observers tried to tie them up and take them to the hospital, but faced fierce resistance. Prisoners fought so that they broke their bones and tore muscles, completely without feeling pain, one injured the spleen and died almost immediately. The remaining three seriously injured the guards. One of them was gnawed through the throat, the other died, because he was bitten off by the testicles and bitten the artery on his leg. The remaining five soldiers after some time committed suicide.

The three surviving subjects were taken to the hospital, and they almost managed to break the straps connecting them. One of them died as soon as he closed his eyes. In conclusion about the autopsy, it was noted that in his blood the oxygen content was 3 times higher than normal. He had 9 bones broken, almost all - as a result of muscle strain during the fight. He was operated for 6 hours, returning to the place the fallen organs and restoring the broken muscles. From anesthesia, he refused and did not react to the manipulation of doctors.

Subjects struggled to stay awake. The hospital died another: as soon as he fell asleep, his heart stopped beating. Two prisoners remained alive. With regard to further actions, the opinions of the testers were divided, the decision to put them back in the cell with three observers won, but one of them snatched the pistol and shot the commander and one of the test subjects.
