After a year and a half more refuge in Ciceu, Petru Rareş asked him in writing forgiveness to the sultan and left for Istanbul, considering that he only with his support could regain his reign.
At the beginning of 1540, at the invitation of the sultan, Petru Rareş left for Constantinople.
With large sums of money, he took steps to revive himself in Moldova, accepting the sultan's real suzerainty.
In February 1541 Petru Rares returned to the reign.
In the second reign, changed after the attempts that he had made in 1538-1540 and seeing unpredictable diplomatic qualities, he sought not to confront two enemies at the same time.

The Voivode maintained friendly relations with his sultan, protector and suzerain, while secretly seeking to support any anti-Ottoman action that seemed to have a chance to succeed.
On 2 March 1542 Rareş ended a secret anti-Ottoman alliance with the Habsburgs.
The military operations financed from abroad, mainly by Petru Rares, undertaken in 1542 by the German states headed by Ioachim II of Brandenburg in order to reject the Turks from Hungary, ended unsuccessfully.
As a result, Mr. was forced to give up the fight with the Ottomans.
At the orders of the sultan he sent him as a hostage to Istanbul his older son Alexander, and after his death in 1544 another son, Elijah, the future voivode of Moldova, was sent to the Ottoman court.
Subsequently sending the hostages to Istanbul comes into use.
Weakened by diseases, Petru Rares died on 3 September 1546 and was buried at Probota, a monastery founded by him.
