After the fall of the Roman Empire, the Christian church provided the only stable goverment in Europe. Christian communities took on the work of teaching the faith, education and healing. In this work, monasteries came to play an important part. Monasteries were the places where the monks lived. Monks wore simple robes, shaves their heads, and shared all their daily tasks. Each monastery was led by an abbot, and the largest monasteries bacame the central point not only of religious life but also of local power. Monks went to as many as eight church services every day. They spent part of their time teaching young boys, who would in time become monks themselves. A monk's day was regulated by hours of work, rest, and worship.

In 1532 Henry VIII over-ruled the Pope and declared himself the head of the church. In 1536, he ordered that all monasteries, such as Tintern Abbey pictured below, be dissolved, or closed down.
