One of the most popular product in Spain, my country, is wine. Wine is a healthy and universal drink and the cultural history of wine shows how appetizing it has been for exquisite palates, tasters and daily drinkers.

If we were to go back a couple of millennia and observe the stage of ancient Greece we could perceive a society in which only aristocrats or the upper classes as philosophers, scientists and people of social, political and economic influence could drink this precious liquid.

These meetings were moderated by the symposium host, who decided how much water to pour into each participant's wine so that they wouldn't get drunk during the evening. The right measure was the ethical and moral standard because drunkenness wasn't well regarded by the Hellenistic society.

The Roman period was characterized by the democratization of wine, drinking began in the canteens and all the people could drink wine, but the upper class: senators, politicians and high-ranking soldiers drank the Salerno wine (high quality) while the soldiers in the countryside were given the vinegar to fight with euphoria. It was also used in field hospitals as a disinfectant and antiseptic

Nowadays, major oenological research institutes consider wine, especially red wine, a drink with antioxidant properties and good for our health. Alcohol that doesn't harm is the one that stays in the bottle, some say, although it feels good to drink a few wines from time to time but remember, always in moderation.

As usual, people were making social discriminations, but fortunately there was the Roman Empire that "balanced" the situation a bit at that time.

Yep, but soldiers were given to drink vinegar, puagh!, disgusting! Thanks for comment ;)
