Washington's Tomb
"A people without the knowledge of their past history, origin and culture is like a tree without roots."
~ Marcus Garvey
On one of my many trips to the Capital of the United States, I stopped by nearby Virginia to check out Mt. Vernon. These are shots that I took as I visited Mt. Vernon, the Estate of the George Washington, the first President of the United States. The pictures captured here are at the tomb of Washington.
The tomb holds both George Washington and his wife, Martha. At one point, Congress tried to exhume the body of Washington in order to have him buried in the U.S. Capitol building. They even built a tomb for him to be buried there, but because Washington implicitly stated in his will that he wanted to be buried at Mt. Vernon, his body stayed there. The tomb meant for Washington later held the "Lincoln Catafalque" or platform used to hold the casket of Abraham Lincoln after he was assassinated. The Lincoln Catafalque has since moved to a different location.
You are able to see the tomb by taking a tour of the Mt. Vernon estate, located right outside of Washington D.C. If you ever find yourself in this area of the United States, I suggest taking a tour of the estate. The history and artifacts present there will truly give you a sense of awe.
