Battle of the Boyne

Boyne Valley - Meath, Ireland

Earlier this month during my trip to Ireland, @cneck and I went to the site of the Battle of the Boyne. The Battle of the Boyne Visitor Centre is located in Boyne Valley Meath, Ireland near the town of Drogheda at the 18th century Oldbridge House.

The Battle of the Boyne took place in 1690 between the forces of King James II of England, and Dutch Prince William of Orange. William's army won the war and James fled to France making the Battle of the Boyne a significant victory in the history of the British Isles.

Above are some of the guns and muskets used during the war. @cneck stood behind the glass to make it look like he was holding one of the rifles.

Below is a look at some of the daggers and swords used during the war. It was really cool to see these artifacts from the 1600's.

Cannons like the ones seen below were used to fire artillery rounds at the enemy. @cneck pretends to be firing this old cannon inside the Oldbridge House.

In the backyard of the recently restored Oldbridge House, there are replica cannons from the war. Many types of cannons were used of various sizes.

Above is a look at one of the the large artillery cannons. These had some impressive distance capabilities. Below is one of the smaller scale, mortar style cannons used to fire rounds at the enemy.

The Battle of the Boyne Visitor Centre had a replica of a possible base camp during the war. Below is a blue striped tent with some barrels.

Carts like the ones seen below were used to transport barrels full of gun powder and materials to the battlefield.

Horses were used to pull the cannons and carts to the battlefield. They also helped to transport the troops. Below is a look at a horse stall at the Oldbridge House.

Horses were not the only animals used during the war. Below is a look at some dog kennels. Gun dogs played a big role in the Battle of the Boyne thanks to their utility and obedience.
