Jodhpur

Jodhpur also knows as the ‘Sun City’ due to its bright and sunny weather is the second largest city in the Indian state of Rajasthan. It is also known as the ‘Blue City’ because of the blue color of the majority of houses in the old city area. It was formerly the seat of a princely state of the same name, the capital of the kingdom known as Marwar. Jodhpur is a popular tourist destination because of its many palaces, forts, and temples, set in the stark landscape of the Thar Desert.

Mehrangarh Fort
Located in Jodhpur it is one of the largest forts in India. This royal abode now turned into a museum is a must see in Jodhpur. The museum depicts the rich culture and heritage of Jodhpur. Built around 1460 by Rao Jodha, the fort is situated 410 feet above the city and is enclosed by imposing thick walls. Inside its boundaries, there are several palaces known for their intricate carvings and expansive courtyards. A winding road leads to and from the city below.

Umaid Bhavan Palace
Popular for its splendid designs and architecture it is one of the last constructed palaces in India. This Palace very aptly mirrors the princely era of Jodhpur. The palace and its surroundings are considered to be brilliantly constructed. Watching the details of this masterpiece is the best thing to do here. This place should hence definitely qualify to every tourist’s list of places to visit in Jodhpur.![]

Jaswant Thada
Jaswant Thada was built by Maharaja Sardar Singh in the memory of his father. It now serves as a burial ground for the rulers of Marwar. The mausoleum is built out of intricately carved sheets of marble. These sheets are extremely thin and polished so that they emit a warm glow when illuminated by the sun.

Balsamand Lake
This popular picnic spot is situated 5 km from Jodhpur on Jodhpur-Mandore Road. It was basically designed as a water reservoir to provide water to Mandore. The lake is surrounded by lush green gardens that have trees like mango, papaya, pomegranate, guava and plum. Animals like jackals and peacocks can also be found there.

Mandore Gardens
Mandore Gardens is one of the best parks to relax any day. It accommodates great traditional values and is a masterpiece of architecture on its own. A true and pure form of gate away that will take tourists back to the glorious princely era of Jodhpur city. Mandore Gardens host a museum, a ‘Hall of Heroes’ and a temple dedicated to the 33 crore Gods.

Phalodi Fort
Phalodi Fort is a historical site, located in the small city of Phalodi in Jodhpur. This imposing edifice was built in 1488 by Rao Hammir Narawat, the grandson of Rao Suja Maharaja of Jodhpur. The fort reflects the fine work of artists of Marwar of the bygone era.

Ghanta Ghar
This clock tower was constructed by Shri Sardar Singh of Jodhpur. The market beside the tower is a major spot for tourists on the shopping spree. One can purchase Rajasthani textiles, clay figurines, miniature camels and elephants, marble inlay work and classic silver jewelry.

Government Museum
Visit the Government Museum to see a unique display of the rich collection of weapons, textiles, miniature portraits, local crafts, and images of Jain Tirthankaras (sages). Other than that, one would find many interesting artifacts here. A visit to this popular museum is a must if one is a lover of history and archaeology.
