RE: St Helens

in #history8 years ago

I have a jar of ash on my computer desk. My momma was pregnant with me when it happened, but as I live at the base of Mt Rainier, just north of Mt St Helens and considered the most dangerous volcano in the US, I am hyper aware of this great state's volcanic history.

It's so cool that your teacher gave you ash. It's really a tangible reminder of the deadly potential of the mountain.

I almost hated to part with it. I remember feeling how fine it was between my fingers. My teacher was very descriptive in teaching us how terrible it was; imagining the world looking all grey and breathing the fine baby powderish ash, and how sticky it was if it got wet. WOW, it's amazing I remember all that!

We went last summer and it is amazing to see entire forrests still mowed over and lying on the ground like match sticks.
