America's gateway closes

After processing more than 12 million immigrants since opening in 1892, Ellis Island regarded as America's gateway was shut down in 1954.

Ellis Island was designated as America's first immigration center by then President Benjamin Harrison in 1890.

History records an estimated 40% of Americans tracing their roots back to Ellis Island. The island was named after the Samuel Ellis a Merchant who owned the land in 1770s.

During World War 1, the island was turned into a detention center for suspected enemies, and also used as a deportation center, hospital to treat wounded vets and coast guard training center.

In 1984, the United States government spent an estimated $160 million to renovate the center and commissioned it into a museum in 1990 and is said to receive more than 2 million visitors yearly.
