I. August 16, 1777
France declares a state of bankruptcy after a huge storm decimated potential agric harvests. Debts were not being paid and interests payments were foregone.

II. August 16, 1858
The first transatlantic telegraph cable was launched today. To commemorate the great innovation, the U.S President and Britain’s Queen exchanged communication over the line.

III. August 16, 1896
The crazy Canadian Gold rush of 1896 was triggered by the announcement of its discovery today. A lot of Americans traveled over to the Klondike of Canada's Yukon Territory for wealth. As usual, it’s the suppliers of tools that make bank in every Goldrush.
IV. August 16, 1977
Popular American singer and actor, Elvin Presley died of a heart attack in Tennessee. He died aged 42.
