The Monastery of Ostrog is a monastery of the Serbian Orthodox Church, that located high up in the large rock on the Ostroška Greda mountain in Montenegro. It is about 15 kilometers from the city Danilovgrad. The monastery was founded in the 17th century by Herzegovinian Metropolitan Vasilii who was buried there. He is a saint, his body is kept in a reliquary in the cave church.
Ostrog Monastery is the most popular pilgrimage in Southeast Europe. It is visited by believers of much religions (Catholics, Orthodox, Muslims...).
According to the stories of pilgrims, thanks to the prayers in this monastery, many have been cured, many have found solutions for their problems.
In the period from 1923 to 1926, the monastery was restored. Before that, there was a fire in which most of this complex was burnt. Fortunately, the cave church is not damaged by fire.
In the lower monastery level there is the Church of the Presentation. On its walls there are frescoes from the 17th century and there is a body of the saint. In the upper monastery level there is the Church of the Holy Cross, and in it the frescoes are adapted to the natural form of the wall of the cave.
From the monastery there is a beautiful view of Belopavlić plain.
The lower Ostrog Monastery is a few kilometers away from this upper, main Monastery. Between them is the Church of Saint Stanko.
Within the Donji Ostrog complex there is the Church of the Holy Trinity and rooms for pilgrims.
