I wonder if Hermann would have stayed by his companion's side and fought if they had not reached the bluffs in time? He seems like an honorable guy, but also seems a shame to get killed because his buddy was fat. Hard call :)

No, Hermann was not going to stay with his fat friend because his fat friend showed no sign of waiting for him at one point when Hermann got behind. He was getting ready to pass him up and leave him when they heard the horses hooves and his friend got inspired again!
