Presidents’ Day officially called “Washington’s Birthday” is an American holiday which us celebrated every year on the third Monday in the month of February.It started on year 1885 in recognition of President George Washington.

Now you might be wondering if it is the birthday of President George Washington why it is celebrated on the 3rd Monday and not on any fix date ?

Traditionally it was celebrated on February 22 actual birth day of President George Washington. Later it was moved to Monday as a part of "1971’s Uniform Monday Holiday Act". In order to create more three day weekend for the workers.

The Act was signed into law on June 28, 1968, and took effect on January 1, 1971.
Some other federal holidays that fall under this act are as below

  • Memorial Day: Originally - on May 30, Celebrated - last Monday in May
  • Labor Day: first Monday in September
  • Columbus Day: Originally - October 12, Celebrated - Second Monday in October
