Russian embroidery

Russian ornament is considered to be one of the most interesting phenomena in the world artistic culture. It represents a unique world of artistic images.

Many people know that Russian folk embroidery was based on symbolism. The ornament that adorned the clothes of our ancestors was often not just a pattern, but carried some meaning. Plant, geometric, zoomorphic and other motifs adorned the human dwelling, religious and household items, clothing, hand-written books. The patterns applied to the object carried the foundations of the universe.

For centuries, the Russian ornament has changed, transformed, but invariably struck the imagination of contemporaries with its poetics and the beauty of lines and colors.

Girls from poor village families decorated their dowry with embroidery (tablecloths, towels, clothes). In the same way, gifts were made for the future relatives. But the city needlewomen embroidered at their own discretion, tried to follow the European fashion, trying to look like a French lady ..
Russia is a huge country, so Russian folk embroidery had its own peculiarities in every region and even region. It is accepted to divide the territory of Russia into 2 large groups, depending on the method of embroidery:

Northern strip;
Middle Russian strip.
