In May 2017 Ringling Brothers Circus performed it's last show... it's legacy remains

in #history7 years ago

Less and less people were going to the circus. I suspect television, televised sports, video games, and things like that likely had something to do with it. I do think it could have been saved. It simply needed to embrace the technology and might actually have to travel less.

That isn't the legacy though.

The legacy comes in the form of one statement associated (but not proven) by P.T. Barnum.

That statement: "There's a sucker born every minute"

We certainly prove this every day. [ 1 | 2 ]

Until recently I thought those of us in the United States had a monopoly on that phrase. If you wanted to find a sucker don't throw a stone in the U.S. it likely will hit one. (see the hyperlink 1 and 2 above for examples)

Though with the crazed immigration policies in the European Union over the past few years it has been proven that those of us in the U.S. no longer have a monopoly.

We are trying to get it back though. We are actually fighting to defend a law that pays for the education of criminal trespassers, while having problems paying for our own citizens education without putting them into massive debt.

I don't know that this compares to things like Sweden deciding to stop investigating rape, because they are having trouble keeping up with it. I wonder if they will finally back off of Julian Assange now. I mean they are having actual rapes regularly now and it is just part of the culture of their immigrants so apparently that makes it okay.

P.T. Barnum you evil bastard, look at the curse you have revealed to the world!!!!!

Yes, I know it was already there gleefully messing with all of our lives, but did you truly have to give nefarious people ideas and a marketing slogan?!?!

Sort:

You are correct less people are going to the circus including me; last time it was since five years or maybe more.

Good Post !
The original "It" movie ruined the circus for me ..and my kids ... I almost decked a clown when he got to close to MY kids ... LMAO (true story)

Read More Reason More ... JTS

Yep. And then you should watch the movie "Real Men".
Towards the end, he pulls a gun on a clown... and for good reason.
"Clown Attack!"

The travelling circuses and rodeos can't compete with ' slo mo' , rerun, zoom in, that is available on TV.
The next wise saying, also could have been P. T Barnham : never give the sucker an even reak.

Virtual Reality seems like it could have been a good way to bring back the circus experience. Broadcast the show as a VR experience.

That wouldn't put "bums on seats" to pay the way, would it?
Is there some way to make it "pay to see" and keep the copy merchants out of the way?
I am showing my age and lack of knowledge of modern tech stuff.

Pay to See is one way. Yet there is also this new thing like we are on now where people pay to support. They would need to try it out and likely experiment until they found what worked best for them.

I'm a fan of the steemit system and things like Patreon.

A reference about the Swedish claim would have been useful.

I used to love the circus when I was a kid. I suspect the reason for it becoming less popular might also have to do with many people now viewing it as a form of animal torture.

A reference about the Swedish claim would have been useful.

Google. A lot of people are talking about that and its been ongoing for months and is getting worse.

There is a huge problem with "rape claims", in that they are just that, claims, without a crime.

It was all over the american media about the current rape culture on american campuses.
And then you had the typical story like was reported in Rolling Stones Magazine, about a fraternity that raped a girl. However, it never happened. The frats in question weren't there. The girl wasn't there. The police tried several times to question the girl, but she would not talk to the police. So, it was a media event, without any truth.

Feminists scream rape culture, while the facts are that women are safer than they have ever been.
That women are attending college in ever greater numbers is proof that the rapes and sexual harassment aren't happening. (would you let your daughter go to a place where rape was prevalent?)

So, that was the media hype... So, what is really happening in Sweden?
It is probably something like, the Swedish men have all been pussified by feminism, and so there is an extreme attraction to dangerous men that Swedish women are engaging in. So, Swedish women are putting themselves in harms way... making a bad situation worse.

That and you have two cultures clashing. In Sweden, doing "this" means this. But in muslim countries, doing "this" means you want to have sex.

I do not know. I have no credible sources. I have a lot of sources that have proved not credible.

Sweden actually has some videos of people getting gang raped. They also have bracelets and other things to try to deter it. Yet how much of it is over emphasized? Hard to say.

I do not like circus!
But I love you!
