Kolskaya Borehole and Cries from the Depths of the Hell
The Kola Superdeep Borehole is the result of a scientific drilling project of the Soviet Union in the Pechengsky District, on the Kola Peninsula. The project attempted to drill as deep as possible into the Earth's crust.
Kolskaya Borehole was founded in the 70s on the centenary of Lenin's birth. The aim was to study the depths of the Earth as well as the composition and structure of the earth crust. When the borehole’s depth reached 10 km, which broke all world records in this area, suddenly a drilling tool fell through. Scientists have suggested that the rope broke off because of high temperatures. It was decided to use a new drilling tool upgrading it with a microphone to record sound characteristics of the borehole. As the installation was moving down to the depth of 14 km the records of all sounds were making. After lifting of the drill with a microphone the scientists listened recording and got shocked. Thousands of screaming voices were heard on the record and the nature of sound said that it came from a large abyss. When this information got into press, the legend of "a hellish borehole" was born. The scientists explained strange voices by high temperatures and air flow that penetrated into the borehole and, however, the majority of people inclined to think that the science didn’t keep its nose clean once again.
The voice recording from the borehole can be easily found and listened to on the Internet. Most people believe it to be “Entrance to Hell” indeed. Afterwards it was decided to close Kolskaya Borehole justifying this by lack of funding. Workers who were engaged in drilling told astonishing and strange things. For instance, the rope broke off several times as if some force pulled it down. When the drilling tool was removed from the borehole it turned to be semifused several times although the temperature at the reached depth could not cause such state. After the drilling tool had reached the set mark, the project was closed after 2 years. Many employees of this project say that during work there was an explosion after which strange fogginess rose from the depths of the borehole casting fear into the people’s hearts.
Great discoveries were made during Kolskaya borehole drilling. Each 100 meters let to learn something new. So, accumulation of gold and other mineral resources in large amounts were discovered at the depth of about 7 km. It was very hard to get applied for a job at borehole. Only 1 out of 100 candidates were accepted. Why the selection was so tough, it is still unknown so far. The funding for the work was stopped immediately after the explosion at the depth after which different rumors and legends about Kolskaya Borehole started to spread.
