P. RAMLEE - Acehnese Legend

 "Jasmerah, Never forget the history" (Soekarno - first Indonesian president). Perhaps the present generation of many who do not know or have forgotten the figure of this one. Hopefully my post this time can help memories of all of us (especially the people of Aceh) to flashbacks to decades ago so as not to be erased from the memory that Aceh had once had a pearl of talent in the country overseas.

Teuku Zakaria bin Teuku Nyak Puteh or better known by the stage name P. Ramlee is an actor, comedian, singer, musician, and also a legendary film director from Malaysia directed Aceh, he was born in Penang Island, Malaysia on March 22, 1929 and died On May 29, 1973 in Setapak, Kuala Lumpur - Malaysia right at the age of 44 years. His father Teuku Nyak Puteh Teuku Karim is from Lhokseumawe City, Aceh - Indonesia, a prominent sailor of Aceh who traveled to neighboring country and settled in Penang, Malaysia. His mother named Che Mah Hussein is a woman of Malay descent. They married in 1925 at Kubang Buaya, Butterworth, Malaysia.

P. Ramlee had a formal education, starting from Kampung Jawa Malay School and then to Francis Light School. After that, his further education at Penang Free School until the outbreak of World War II. During the Japanese occupation, Pelengkon Bujang Lapuk also studied at the Kaigun school (Japanese marine army school).

The singer of the song "honey three" (which was re-popularized by Indonesian musician Ahmad Dhani) is in addition to good acting and singing, he also mastered ukelele, guitar and violin instruments under the care of Kamaruddin (brass band leader at Penang Free School). He then joined the Sekampung Teruna Orchestra and then Sinaran Bintang Sore. He has been a singing champion singer who held Radio Pulau Pinang in 1947 and was selected as the Main Singing Star of Malaya. In the race, he began to use the letter "P" (for Puteh) at the beginning of his name and since then the name of P. Ramlee continues to stick to the end of his life. He also created and sang more than 360 songs mostly used for the soundtrack of his movies.

His brilliant career start was in “Chinta (1948)” which was the first deputation Movie he played by acting as a villain and background singer. Among the famous movies he starred were "Pendekar Bujang Lapok, Masam Masam Manis, Seniman Bujang Lapok,  Ibu Mertuaku, Tiga Abdul, Nujum Pak Belalang, dan Madu Tiga". Indeed, the film was still in the background black and white color is not like today's movies and not supported by sophisticated technology facilities in making of, though not reduce the quality of acting and the story line of the movie itself. During the period between 1948 to 1955 he managed to capture his acting talents into 27 movies. The last movie she starred titled “Hang Tuah (1955)”. In that same year (1955) he began to expand as a director and movie director. The first movie that he directed entitled “Penarik Becak (1955)”. His landing movies are successful because they contain many cultural and religious elements.

The man who spent his life on this art had 10 children, 2 sons (from his marriage to Junaidah Daeng Harris who also directed Aceh in 1950), 3 stepchildren from his three wives, Junaidah Daeng Harris, Noorizan (second wife, Married in 1955, ex-wife of the Sultan of Perak), and Salmah Ismail or Saloma (third wife, married in 1961), and 4 adopted children. Eight other children besides Mohd. Nasir and Arfan ie Sazali, Abdul Rahman, Norma, Armali, Betty, Zakiah, Sabaruddin and Dian.

At the end of his life he had fallen into poverty, due to his career in the world of film that had decreased drastically as cornered by the media who do not like the glory. There was no offer to play a movie, singing or being a director, until finally he suffered a heart attack until the last breath on May 29, 1973 in his young age (44 years). He is buried in the Land of Islamic Cemetery, Street Ampang Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia. He left a house on the road of Depap that had been used as P. Ramlee Warning Library in 1986. In addition, his name has been immortalized as the street name at Kuala Lumpur City Center into Jalan P. Ramlee (formerly called Jalan Parry) on Year 1982.

Here are some of the awards he received for his work and services for the art world, including: 

  1. Best Male Actor, in the Movie My Son Sazali at the 4th Asia Film Festival in Tokyo (1957);
  2. Best White Black Photography Award at Asian Film Festival;
  3. Degree of Titular Sargeant from Askar Melayu;
  4. Best Comedy Movie, in Bujang Lapuk movie at the Asian Film Festival in Kuala Lumpur (1959);
  5. Best Comedy Movie, in Movie of the Grasshopper of the Grasshopper at the 7th Asia Film Festival in Tokyo (1960);
  6. The Mangku Negara (AMN) Expert star from the DYMM Seri Paduka Baginda at the Third Supreme Court in Malaysia (1962);
  7. Typical Award The Most Versatile Talent, in the movie Mother Mertua Ku at the 10th Asian Film Festival in Tokyo (1963);
  8. Best Comedy Movie, in the movie "Madu Tiga a.k.a Honey Three" at the 11th Asia Film Festival in Taipei (1964);
  9. Asia's Best Song Converters at the Asian Film Festival in Hong Kong (1956);
  10. Star of Greatness Darjah Panglima Setia Mahkota with title of Tan Sri from Seri Paduka Majesty at Pertuan Agung in Malaysia (1990).
