RED TAILS

in #history7 years ago

Tuskegee Airmen is the popular name of the first African Americans military pilots in the Second World War.
Nicknames were given at Tuskegee University, where they got their training for a military pilot.
They stayed and trained at Moton Field, the Tuskegee Army Air Field.

As the first African American pilots, they had to undergo double-tier training as opposed to their white counterparts.

The first group of pilots named The 99th Pursuit Squadron later named, the 99th Fighter Squadron, is the first group of pilots who have been given the opportunity to prove and deploy overseas (to North Africa in April 1943, and later to Sicily and Italy).

In the first battles they flew with the Curtiss P-40 Warhawk.

Some time later they got the P-47 Thunderbolt,And there was their famous nickname RED TAIL. A nickname for a red tail plane.

And finally with the aircraft with which they became most commonly associated, the North American P-51 Mustang.

The 332nd Fighter Group, which originally included the 100th, 30th, and 302nd Fighter.
This was the first black flying group.
The group was deployed to Italy in early 1944. In June 1944,
332nd group added 99th Fighter Squadron.
Tuskegee Airmen were so good at fighting that their colleagues had asked for their escort in missions (bomber escorts).
They never lost the airplanes they protected.
And they helped, and I personally think, Because of them personally that the P-51 Mustang becomes an icon of World War II

1578 combat missions.
179 bomber escort missions.
96 Distinguished Flying Crosses
14 Bronze Stars
744 Air Medals
8 Purple Heart
Very impressive for people who could not sit on the bus if the places were not marked for colored people.

For the end I recommend the movie:The Tuskegee Airmen (1995), Red Tails (2012).
Because I can not describe in words what these people were experiencing.
These are Hollywood movies but you will get a picture.

thanks for stopping by:)

Their contribution to the war effort was invaluable. It's good to see them get the recognition now that was denied them at the time.

Thanks for the informative post and I second the recommendations for the movies.

Thanks for sharing your opinion with me.
This is a little recognition from my side, a little sign that they have not forgotten :)
I think they deserve much more.
