From History: Today's Famous Birthdays

1. William Beaumont

William Beaumont was a surgeon in US Army and is popularly known as "Father of Gastric Physiology" because of his researches on human digestion.

He started as a teacher initially and then, trained under Dr. Truman Powel to become a physician.

During the period of 1812 to 1815, he served as assistant surgeon for US Army during the war of 1812.

Later in 1820, he joined Army as Surgeon and did research on human digestion by doing research on wounded employee of American Fur Company.

The person had a bullet shot from near into his stomach which made a big hole in that person's stomach which never got closed.

So, Dr. Beaumont used to experiment with that person by extracting gastric juice and inserting food into his stomach through the hole created by bullet.

This led to good understanding of human digestion and Beaumont is hailed as "Father of Gastric Physiology"

2. Justin Langer

Justin Langer is a former Australian test and ODI batsman who represented Australia in 105 test matches.

He currently works as a coach for Western Australia and domestic team of Perth Scorchers.

He is best remembered for his partnerships with Australian opener Mathew Hayden.

The duo produced 5655 runs second only to West Indian opening pair of Desmond Haynes and Gordon Greenidge.

Besides playing for Australia, Langer also played for English county teams Middlesex and Somerset.

3. Jena Malone

Jena Malone is an American actor, musician and photographer who is best known for her role of Johanna Mason in "The Hunger Games" series of movies.

Besides this, she acted in movies like Contact, Into the Wild, The Ruins, Sucker Punch, Pride and Prejudice to name a few.

Besides acting, she also worked as Indi pop musician.

4. Voltaire

François-Marie Arouet known as Voltaire was an French enlightenment writer, historian and philosopher famous for his wit, advocacy of freedom of religion, freedom of speech and separation of church and state.

He worked on almost all literary forms including poems, novels, historical, scientific and essays.

He wrote more than 20,000 letters and more than 2000 books including pamphlets.

5. Tina Brown

Tina Brown is a journalist, magazine editor, talk show host and author of "The Diana Chronicles", a biography of Diana, the princess of Wales.

She was born in Britain but now as US Citizen because of her emigration in 1984 to edit Vanity Fair magazine.

She is also known as Lady Evans.

For her contributions on her services to overseas journalism, she was appointed as "Commander of the Order of the British Empire"(CBE) in 2000 and in 2007, she was inducted into "Hall of Fame" of Magazine Editors.

She has also received 4 George Polk Awards, 5 Overseas Press Club Awards along with 10 National Magazine Awards.
