man's relationship with the unknown

in #history6 years ago

have you ever noticed that even though over the last 200 years we humans have discovered things that collectively blow our minds, we still are so very sure of what "we know" and believe today? 200 years ago no one essentially had any clue about cars, computers, antibiotics, nuclear weapons, quantum theory, genetic engineering... the list goes on and out. yet we are still so ignorantly sure of ourselves, our ideas, our petty ideologies; and that we are "modern" and somehow beyond history.

but the truth is we are still so stuck in basic history and civilization building that it is sickening, we are still tiny tiny pawns in an epic story that will transcend the next 10,000; 100,000; and 1,000,000 years. we cannot fathom the magnificent highs and lows of the future, but we are so primed and poised to exalt our colossal benightedness today. for the masses of us our relationship with the unknown is the same as ever; don't ask and don't tell ! we prefer to luxuriate in our ignorance.

Our ideas on how to construct truth in the hard sciences are not yet a century old. I'd consider it a job well done if our descendants continue to progress to the point they can see our ignorance plainly. And, as they unpack our stupidity, may it serve as a warning against their own: hindsight is 20/20, we are not unintelligent and it's easy to forget how hard won human knowledge is.

good points, thanks

You are so right. I always wonder why so many people run behind the latest findings.

ty... have a good day
