Seoul is a modern city, but one can find a beautiful mix of traditional Buddhist art, flowers design and modern Korean culture elements blended in one in the beautiful Jogyesa Temple (조계사) The photos you will find here are from the autumn time when the temple transforms into a colorful garden, which brings harmony and joy to the busy daily life.

As the main temple as well as the district head temple of Jogye order in Seoul, Jogyesa Temple is the center of Korean Buddhism. The temple has been built in the late 14th century during the Goryeo period. This temple is like a phoenix, which resurrected from a heavy fire and ashes and has been rebuilt under the name of Gackhwangsa Temple in 1910 with the heavy work and efforts of many monks.

The temple was given a role as the head temple of Korea’s Buddhism and renamed to Tegosa Temple in 1936.
During the Japanese colonial invasion, the temple becomes one of the strongest fortresses of Korean Buddhism in 1910-1945.

In 1954, there has been a deep wish and purification drive to reduce and eliminate the Japanese influence. The goal has been to revive traditional Buddhism, which established the present day Jogyesa Temple as a result.

The name Jogyesa Temple has been chosen to show the structure's status as the main temple of the Jogye Order of Korean Buddhism, which combines and integrates the Korean Zen and Textual Schools of Buddhism.

Hello, I'm living in South Korea now. Sometimes I walk inside Jogye temple for some refreshing. Have you visited Jongmyo(Royal Ancestral Shrine)? I think Jongmyo is also a good place for foreigners to visit, and it is not far from Jogey temple.

Hello, thank you for your comment. Yes, I have been there too. I had 5 trips to South Korea, they all were for work, but I always spend every possible minute with discovering temples & museums. Once I spent 1 month in Seoul, so I had a lot of time to get to know the city.
