Baiturrahim Great Mosque located in Singkil Town Center, the capital of Aceh Singkil Regency, is the first and the oldest mosque. Prior to the name of Baiturrahim Great Mosque, this mosque was named Jamik Baiturrahim Mosque which was built in 1256 AH / 1836 AD in Singkil long before it was finally transferred to the new Singkil in 1909.
The Great Mosque of Baiturrahim had undergone a renovation in the Dutch colonial period and expanded in 1953. At first the Grand Mosque of Baiturrahim measuring 17 m x 17 m with 1 dome, then its size changed to 20 m x 30 m plus the presence of 1 small dome on the east of the mosque. On March 28, 2005 the Great Mosque of Baiturrahim suffered heavy damage caused by tidal waves and earthquakes.
Then on May 7, 2005 formed Baiturrahim Mosque Development Committee assigned specifically to repair and rehabilitate damaged mosques that can be used at the same time planning the construction of a new mosque as a replacement for a damaged mosque. The new design of the mosque building has a size of 37 m x 37 m with four high towers, four minarets and one large dome.
The new mosque building design measures 37 x 37 m with 4 high towers, 4 minarets and one large dome and 4 small dome. The large dome, roof and ornament are attempted to look similar to the shape of a mosque built in 1909.
History of Baiturrahim Singkil Great Mosque
Referring to the Historic Mosque Book in Nanggroe Aceh, published by the Sanctuary Field, the Baiturrahim Great Mosque was first built around 1256 AH / 1836 AD, the construction was carried out by King Singkil in the royal capital of Singkil (Old Singkil) under the name Jamik Baiturrahim Mosque. Construction is built with limestone, marine meranti, palm leaf roof and fibers. But the information about this mosque in the historical record is very difficult to trace, let alone old Singkil was ravaged in the spell of the earthquake and tsunami (geloro laut) in 1883 AD
