Adventures of Joshua Slocum, the first man to navigate around the world alone

On 27 June 1898, the first man to navigate alone around the world successfully completed his journey. The Name of this Temerar: Joshua Slocum.

He was born in Wilmot Station - Annapolis, New Scotland on February 20, 1844, being the fifth of the 11 children of John and Sarah Jane Slocum. At the age of 14 he ran away from home, hiring himself on a fishing boat. He arrives in Ireland, Dublin, then Liverpool, where he engages in the Tangier commercial ship.

His special qualities are shortly to become a crew on a ship carrying grain and coal between England and the United States. She sets up in San Francisco, dealing with trade. In 1869 he was given the command of the Washington ship, which he runs on San Francisco-Sidney. Here she meets Virginia Walker, with whom she marries in 1871 and will have seven children.

In the coming years, commanding the various ships, Joshua Slocum (upper photo) will have the opportunity to go through the world. The adventures he passes relate to the pages of a San Francisco newspaper, to which he collaborates.

In 1887, giving up business, he buys a small craft - Liberdade, which sails from Montevideo to Washington. He then builds a 11.2 meter ship, which he calls Spray (picture below). With this, on April 24, 1895, he starts from Boston on the first water ride around the world, made by one person.

After more than three years, on June 27, 1898, Spray returned to the United States after having traveled 74,000 km. The extraordinary adventure was told by Slocum in the Single Book around the world.

The end of Joshua Slocum was on his adventurous life. In November 1909 he started with Spray on a trip to Orinoco and since then no one has ever seen him. Long search (only in 1924 was officially declared dead) could not make light in the case of the disappearance of the sailor.
