National Memorial Museum is located at Savar, 35 km northwest of Dhaka. The mausoleum stands as a memorial of outstanding sacrifice and valor of great martyrs of Bangladesh's War of Liberation.

In 1978 a national competition was organized for the design to build a monument. Architect Moinul Hossain's design was selected from Saturna's Contestant.

The original building consists of seven triangular walls on the uneven height and individual foundation. The highest pillar is at the base of the minimum length, and the column is placed on the longest base, with the lowest height. The walls are angular with a fold in the center and one row after another. The highest point or height of the structure is 45.22 meters high. The structure is arranged in such a way that it is seen in different angles from different angles.

The architect used cement-stone concrete to build the main pillar, but used the red brick to build its adjoining infrastructure and pavement. The use of different elements has increased the dignity of the original pillar.

The whole complex covers 34 hectares (84 acres) of land. It is surrounded by 10 hectares (24.7 acres) of green land. There are several mass grabs and a reflection water pool in front of the pillar. When entering through the main entrance, the pillar is visible at the entrance to the entrance. But to reach the main altar, to cross the bridges constructed on some high-lying areas, pavements and an artificial lake, they all identify the long struggle for independence.

The project is completed in three stages. The first phase began in 1972. Land acquisition and project roads were constructed at a cost of 26 lakh taka. In the second phase between 1974-1982, the construction of public-graveyard, helipad, parking spaces, pavement etc. was spent on the construction of 3 million 77 lakhs. In the third phase completed in August 1982, the main pillar was constructed besides artificial lakes, adjacent green areas, cafeteria, housing etc. In the third phase, the expenditure is 848.65 lakh taka. The Public Works Department of Bangladesh Government has supervised the construction.
