On this day in 1888, John Garand was born on a modest farm in Quebec, Canada. He was one of twelve children.

After relocating to the United States with his family, he learned to speak English while sweeping floors in a textile mill. After that he worked at a shooting gallery, where he began to develop a deep interest in firearms. Utilizing his natural aptitude and the machining skills he obtained while working in the textile mill he created a tool that aided American troops to defeat the Nazis in WWII and many years thereafter through the Korean War.
