Many ancient building and castles in the United Kingdom are run by an organisation called English Heritage who aim to bring history to life. During the summer months they put on many displays at their sites including this one at Peveril Castle in Derbyshire.
The event told of the revolt by barons against King Edward II between 1173 - 1174. While there is no records of the castle ever being attacked it's ownership did change hands quite often from it's original owners, the Perveril family who were granted the land by William the Conqueror as the lords and various owners were involved in many plots.
After the display the various knights were more than happy to post for pictures, despite the fact they were incased in wool and steel on a very hot summer day.

Those chains are not what they look like but used to connect to weapons while on horseback so they weren't dropped.

Not much left of the castle but it was never a large one but you can walk around the remains of the keep and the views from there are amazing.
It's all about imagination. If you can imagine what it once was then it's worth a visit. Reenacting the battles held there helps too :)
