It sounds strange, but in Ireland it was once believed that tea drinking suppressed the country's economic growth and should be considered as something reckless and uncontrollable.
In the early twentieth century, critics of the aromatic drink claimed that people drinking tea of the fair sex behaved no better than alcoholics: they were wasting time and money wasting away from caring for children and the home.
It was believed that traditionally female duties are vital for the progress of the national economy. It was also believed that tea is a drug. Ireland seriously thought that this product is addictive. In addition, in the 19th century, tea was not such an inexpensive drink as it is now, and for poor women drinking tea became unallowable
