Hong Kong Snapshot (66) – Hollywood Road, it’s not about film but defense 香港隨拍 (66) - 荷李活道，其實與荷李活無關

In the last post we talk about the British moved their base to Central and Admiralty. Because of it, the Hollywood Road was built. Hollywood Road is the first street of Hong Kong. Let me tell you about the origin of the name and the feature of Hollywood Road.

上回講到英國政府正式將總部遷到中環及金鐘一帶，亦因這一事件造就了荷李活道的出現。荷李活道是香港的第一條街道，至於荷李活道的名稱由來，還有荷李活道有什麼特色，且由我一一道來。

Although the British moved to Central and Admiralty, there would not give up Sheung Wan, the place they first landed HK and developed. So the first thing they did was to build a road, a road connecting Sheung Wan and Central. The road was the Queen’s Road named as Queen Victoria and it was the first main road of Hong Kong.

雖然英國已將總部遷到中環及金鐘一帶，但上環作為他們登陸後第一個發展地區，他們當然不會輕易放棄，所以他們想到的第一件事就是修路，建立一條連接上環及中環的主要道路。這條路叫Queen’s Road，以英女皇為名，是香港的第一條主要道路。

At that moment, they found something urgent. As they knew that most Chinese were living mountain side at the south of Sheung Wan. When they built the Queen’s Road at the coast, if one day the Chinese rebelled, they can easily attack them. So, they built a street just between the mountain side and the Queen’s Road as a buffer. The street is the Hollywood Road today.

這個時候，他們發現問題出來了。這個時候的華人大多聚居於上環的半山，他們在岸邊建立了這麼一條道路，如果有一天華人們造反攻下來豈不是很容易？所以，他們在Queen’s Road和上環半山之間再建了一條緩衝道路，就是荷李活道了。

Hong Kong is one of the world’s largest film exporters and has the name of “Hollywood East”. However, I have to say that there is no relationship between Hollywood and Hollywood Road. When Hollywood Road was built, there were no even Hollywood in US. At that time, there were many holly trees in the street just forming a wood. So the British named the street as Hollywood Road.

所謂「東方有個荷里活」，香港曾以電影聞名世界，有「東方荷李活」之稱。不過，荷李活道卻與荷里活完全沒有關係，荷李活道建成之時美國都還未有荷李活，相信很多人都猜錯了哈哈。那個時候的荷李活道有很多冬青樹，就是用來造聖誕樹的冬青樹，由於冬青樹的英文是Holly，而這裡的冬青樹多到一個小樹林的(woods)，所以英國人就命名為Hollywood Road 荷李活道了。

As the first street of Hong Kong, Hollywood Road today is a road of history, culture, art and lifestyle. Every tourist must visit it! Central Police Station, the first Police Station of Hong Kong, and the Victoria Prison, the first prison of Hong Kong, are located in Hollywood Road. The world’s longest outdoor covered escalator system passes through Hollywood Road. And also the Man Mo Temple, the only place that was allowed by the colonial government to have the power of arbitration to Chinese, is also at Hollywood Road.

荷李活道作為香港的第一條街道，發展至今已成為一條集歷史、文化、藝術、生活於一身的街道，是每個遊客都要去的地方。多個法定古蹟，如香港的第一間警署舊中區警署，還有香港的第一所監獄都在荷李活道。全球最長的行人扶手電梯系統，也途經荷李活道。而上環文武廟 - 當年英國政府唯一批准以中國方法進行宣誓及裁決華人糾紛的地方，也在荷李活道。

Besides, the PMQ, a brand new creative and art center of Hong Kong, is also at Hollywood. When Sun Yat-sen, foundation father of the modern China, was studying in Hong Kong, he also lived in Hollywood Road.

另外，香港最新打造的創意文化中心PMQ，也在荷李活道，還有國父孫中山當年在香港求學時，也是住在荷李活道。

And the entertainment, the Hollywood Road east is connecting Lan Kwai Fong and the Hollywood Road South is connecting the SOHO. The name of SOHO is not only referring to the SOHO of London, but also has the meaning of “South of Hollywood Road”. Today, I took a walk at the Hollywood Road West. This section is at Sheung Wan, and got lot of Chinese feature, mixing with the western.

娛樂方面，荷李活道東段連結蘭桂坊，南段連接蘇豪區，這個蘇豪區的名字除了是參照英國倫敦的蘇豪區，還有「South of Hollywood Road」的意思。這天，我走了一小段的荷李活道的西段，這一段路靠近上環，所以有比較多的東方特色，與西方特色混和一起。

Hollywood Road was done. Central and Admiralty were settled. Then the British planned to build a city. The city was called the “Victoria”.

荷李活道建好了，中環金鐘也穩定了，英國人就準備在這裡建一座城，這座城的名字叫「維多利亞城」。
