What is national hispanic heritage month

in #hispanic3 years ago

Hispanic Heritage Month is an annual celebration of the events and culture of Latinos and Hispanics of the U.S. This event, running from September 15 to October 15, recalls how the community has already influenced and provided assistance to Americans in general.

Hispanic Heritage Month began as a memorial week when it was first introduced in June 1968 by California Conference Member George E. Brown. The urge to realize Latino help has had a year-long moment in the 1960s when the civil rights movement was at its helm and there is a growing awareness of the multicultural identity of the United States.

History of Hispanic National Heritage

Brown, who is a representative of East Los Angeles and much of the San Gabriel Valley — both of which are actually occupied by Hispanic and Latino members — wants to realize the role those communities have played as far back as American history.

On September 17, 1968, the Conference ended The Beginner's Law 90-48, formally authorizing and asking the president to issue an annual proclamation declaring September 15 and 16 to signal the beginning of National Hispanic Heritage Week and calling on "the people of the United States, especially the citizens of teaching, to observe the week with the same appropriate ceremonies and activities." President Lyndon B. Johnson issued the first Hispanic Heritage Week presidential proclamation on a similar day.
