"Gate 13"
Del the Funky Homosapien doesn’t have much left to prove this far in his career. The founding member of underground group, Hieroglyphics, he’s been providing vibrant alternative lyrics since he released his first solo album, ‘I Wish My Brother George Was Here’ in 1991 with the help of his cousin, Ice Cube. However, you can clearly hear how much he has matured since while maintaining his signature dynamic flow.
Bonded together with the production powers of Amp Live (formerly of Zion I) making electronic-tinged boom bap Hip Hop, they combine to form the Bay Area power house duo reminiscent of Deltron 3030’s (Del the Funky Homosapien & Dan the Automator) experimental first album in the year 2000.

In an interview with HipHopDX, he mentions, “The title is alluding to opening up a way to some bad shit. Amp and I both be talking about tech shit, musical trends, how shit evolve, you know, nerding out on music. We’ve known each other for years, and got common interests as far as composing music and dissecting it.”
This definitely rings true as I listen to the album a second time after a few days. The songs are catchy enough for me to question “Where have I heard this before?” Thinking that it’s a song from a previous album. Every track is diverse and complex to set itself apart from anything else they’ve done before. I will be listening to ‘Gate 13’ for weeks to come, giving myself a fresh take on Hip Hop coming out of the Bay Area.
Stay tuned for the next edition coming next Tuesday and be sure to follow me at @stickykeys! Also if there are any albums you would like me to review, drop a comment below.
