We’ve been blessed to witness the amazing work 4Unity is doing to help uplift the community.

PROBLEM
In spite their great cause, 4Unity struggles with funding to operate all of its programs year round and have not been able to host a Food4U event since August 2017. Most of the programs are funded by members of the organization out of pocket in order to serve the Hartford community who depend on charitable organizations for assistance, particularly during these difficult economic times. The homeless is a vulnerable population, lacking basic essential resources, such as food, housing, clothing, and medical care to name a few. Although Connecticut is making strides in helping house more people in efforts to eradicate homelessness, it does not address the root cause of the problem. Mental health illness and substance abuse are major factors which cause debilitating cognative, emotional, physical and social disruptions impairing a person’s ability to function in daily life, leading to homelesness. According to a 2009 study by the National Institute of Mental Health, approximately 20-25% of the homeless population in the United States suffer from severe mental illness, compared to 6% in the general population. These despairing statistics are still a reality today in 2018, almost a decade later.

Another key problem affecting the homeless population is access to food. Have you ever wondered what it would be like if you didn’t know whether you were going to eat today? What if your basic physical human need for food most of us take for granted was not guaranteed? The homeless population live with this struggle every single day. And with the current administration’s proposed funding cuts to the SNAP (Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program) that helps provide food for low income, disabled, and elderly people, millions across the country will literally have food taken out of their mouths. The need to feed the community will only increase. This adds urgency to the importance of 4Unity Corp’s Food4U program connecting the people directly to the food and resource programs creating a movement of positive change and solution, instead of a temporary band aid. As a people, we have a moral responsibility to take care of one another, and Musicoin has provided us the opportunity help heal our communities together.

SOLUTION
