India has been consuming milk for thousands of years. Before the British came, Indians used to drink milk without butchering cows. In fact, Hindu kings probably banned the butchering cows and whoever killed them was sent to jail. Moreover, cows can be used for cow dung, urine and so on. Cow dung is the best organic fertilizer, fuel for 'gobar-gas', soap, etc. Next, cow urine has medicinal benefits and has tremendous nutrients in it. There are definitely ingenious ways of utilizing cows without killing them.
