A Hidden Gem, Stewart, British Columbia

in #hiking5 years ago (edited)

If you enjoy the outdoors and haven't spent much time in Northern British Columbia I would definitely recommend checking out Stewart BC, the small mining town that sits on the British Columbia / Alaska border a couple hours north of Smithers, BC.

Although the town of Stewart itself does not have too many attractions there drive into the town alone was nothing short of amazing. I would like to mention that gas stations are not open 24/7 here so if you do need to refuel it is best to get that done during the day time. If you do need a nice cold drink after a nice day of exploring, there is a bar in Stewart as well in Hyder Alaska which is just down the road about 5 minutes. You do not need a passport to get into the US here as there is no border patrol currently however upon returning to Canada there is Border Control.

If you want to check out the Salmon Glacier in BC, you can visit it by travelling past the US border into Hyder, Alaska and continue on the road until you cross the BC border again.

My brother and I decided to check out the glacier as we heard it has some spectacular views. It was a dirt road most of the way but was safe to take a car up when when we visited in June.

Unfortunately it was not the clearest day when we went however it was definitely worth it to enjoy some time outdoors.

Here are some more pictures from the day.

I wonder what he found during his climb.

British Columbia / Alaska Border

Climbing the tree seems more simple than this.

Since we are so close to the ocean it is not uncommon for low lying clouds to cover the valley.

Back in Stewart it was Sunny again
