Sunrise at the top of the world…

in #hiking8 years ago (edited)

OK, not the top of the world, but at least of South Africa. Mfadi Peak, Drakensberg, 3,451m above sea level (11,320 ft)

We took two days to get up starting in the deepest valley in the center of the picture

Sleeping as close to the vertical part of the escarpment as feasibly possible.

Ready for an early morning assault on the steepest and hardest part of the assent. We were hit by a vicious wind for the first 3 hours of the night along with driving rain… the tents were blown flat to the ground on the windward side. Small wonder we didn’t snap a pole or two.

Almost at the top of the escarpment after we have just exited the narrow pass filled with loose rocks

It's at this point that the altitude really begins to bite… You are breathing like a steam train but still can't seem to get any air just walking up a slight incline.

Camp for night 2. Easily the best cave in the entire Drakensberg. You can pitch at lest 4 or 5 decent sized tents in it and it shelters you from the biting wind and any rain or snow.

The view from the mouth of the cave to the starting point waaaay below.

Dawn begins to break… above the clouds

The view from the mouth completely different from the evening before.

The sun begins to emerge

Painting a splendid tapestry in the clouds.

The assault on the peak finally completed.

Another breathless slog up the last couple of vertical meters in a bone shearing wind, complete with puddle, frozen solid from the rain of two nights before.

At a height of 3,450 meters (11,320 ft), this is the highest peak in South Africa.

But quite doable at 2 days up and 2 days down.

Excellent post ..... is a beautiful part of our lovely country ... Am I correct in guessing you are Afrikaans and you had your Bols brandy with ? {smile} ...just kidding.. your opening sentence has 'Drank'ensberg ...
Fantastic pictures and quite an adventure you had there !!

Nice catch, fixed... thanks.

wow what an adventure, what a post and those stunning photos really make it all worthwhile .thanks for the share of this incredible view of the world as we should all see it. Irreplaceable in the Universe I believe !!

simply breathtaking @gavvet!
I'm sure the temperature differences from the top to bottom was quite significant.

100% Sweaty at the bottom, well below freezing at the top with exacerbated wind chill factor. I thought my cheeks were going to freeze and get frostbite at one stage.

Epic!! I was fortunate enough to climb Table Mountain while in Cape Town, with what limited time I had, but this looks just incredible. The terrain is so varied, with all the little micro-climates on the ascent! I want to visit again, and you're certainly inspiring me to do so! :) Thanks!

Table mountain is great for a one day expedition... can wait to do it again. I havent climbed it in over 20 years

How do you write so well? Excellent post.

Was this over the weekend?

27 April 2017 [edit]15.... near the end of the rainy season and just before the first snows... Although we did have a thunder storm the first night.

Oh I see... so it's in the future ;)

Fixed... Its now obvious, its getting late...

Awesome pics @gavvet, especially those of the clouds below where youre standing. reminds me of my first hike up to Mont Aux Sources years ago...Love it

Mont Aux Sources is the best and doable as a day trip... even nicer when you sleep overnight. We spent new years eve there a year or two back

It must have felt amazing up there watching the sky catch fire. Nice one man.

It truly was... but then again there is nothing in the Drakensberg that is not absolutely amazing.

Ok dude, you just screwed up my bucket list. Cheers.
