It often surprises me that it is women who object to the sight of a man carrying a small bag of some kind. Backpacks or large bags seldom draw attention, but if you carry a bag just big enough for a mobile telephone, wallet, and notebook, then it tends to draw smiles at a minimum. I have used a small "Indiana Jones" style shoulder bag for years, and it is always women who comment on it.
