Hidden Places San Diego - Pioneer Park

Gravestones adorn the back quarter of this park, tucked away near an elementary school.

Over 1,000 bodies are buried here in what was once the Calvary Cemetery and is now Pioneer Park

From Washington Street, you can see the tombstones on the hill and visiting the park has a reverent feeling to it. Several plaques are placed listing the names of those interred from the graves which were still marked. San Diego's wealthiest and holiest families were buried here.

San Diego was not originally built for automobiles, rules were set saying no street could be made unless it was graded for rail travel. A.G. Gassen served as manager for one of these lines, the The San Diego & Old Town Motor Railroad which opened November 21, 1887. His family, along with the McCoy family who supported roads without rails, built their wealth on San Diego's growing transportation industry.

Whether it's ghosts or history you're looking for, Pioneer Park is unlikely to disappoint.
