Hemp Homes Might Revolutionize The Building Industry

in #hemp6 years ago

Hemp homes aren't anything new. However, in recent years, more individuals and building companies have become increasingly interested in turning to consider the benefits of hemp, specifically in opting to use hempcrete as a part of their building plans.

There are thousands of potential uses for hemp: fuel, food, clothing, animal bedding, medicine, and much more.

Hemp can be used as a building material in a variety of ways and though it was discovered many years ago, it's been seeing a re-birth in popularity lately.

Hemp is referred to as being the world's most sustainable building material.

And a growing number of folks not only in the US, have been looking to reconsider the vast potential that this building material has to offer. And though it might have a lot of potential, those who favor this building material have a big hurdle ahead of them in trying to battle the stigma surrounding this plant.

For right now, special permits are still required for those in the US who want to build with hemp, using something like hempcrete. The requirements surrounding those permits vary between states, sometimes even by county.

Despite the difficulty, many entrepreneurs are still trying to grow this space.

It's estimated that there have been at least 50 homes constructed in the US that can be referred to as modern hemp houses.

There are now a myriad of different companies scattered around the US that have started to incorporate hemp into their building methods. You can find them in places like Colorado and Washington. And it isn't only gaining popularity in the US either, as interest has sprung up around the world.

You can find hundreds of buildings located around Europe that were built with hempcrete.

Hemp homes have been built in Israel, Canada, New Zealand, the UK, and elsewhere.

According to industry experts, they suggest that one of the biggest problems facing those in the market at the moment is the issue with meeting building codes; it's difficult to get approval.

And not only that, but they say that trying to get a mortgage for such a house has also proven to be rather restrictive. To try and avoid issues, they want to have hempcrete certified by building coders, rather than having to have each one individually inspected and approved.

To try and rectify the confusion and streamline the potential revolution of the building industry, interest in places like Washington has been growing to have a processing plant established. This way, local farmers who are interested in growing the crop can take part in supplying the building industry. Right now they are finding that they can grow it but they want the freedom to be able to do more with it.

I want one!

It's interesting that as we get more technologically advanced, we are discovering so many new uses for this ancient and multifaceted plant. And such an amazing resource--it can be grown almost anywhere! Too bad there is such a stigma surrounding hemp in many countries. If the laws that prevent industrial hemp use were abolished, so many human necessities would become more sustainable and more affordable.

Well Said! Thanks great comment. Following YOU!

Free the natural healing resource used fo4 thousands of years! Free the herb! Free the earth!

Hemp is a great material for construction, the insulation properties are amazing and it is breathable, perfect for countries which suffer with humid or damp climate. Our truck is isolated with a mixture of hemp and wood, it works really well.
I hear what you are saying about the regulations, in Ireland to grow hemp your field that you wish to grow it in has to be at a certain distance away from a road. In Ireland it is near impossible to find land like that. It was a clever move on making that regulation. It's a perfect crop to grow, it's also insect resistant, and like you said every part of the plant can be used so no waste. Thanks for sharing this great post @doitvoluntarily

Hemp is a wonder crop that can save us from environmental disaster but, what a surprise, is discouraged by the elite who stand to lose if widely adopted.

I hope this will change as the benefits of hemp are widespread.

Great piece, helping to build awareness.

Makes So Much Sense! Thanks For Sharing! Following YOU!

It's a shame there are so many obstacles; like bamboo, hemp is such a great all-round sustainability plant with SO many uses. Add to that that it can be grown across so many different climates and do OK...

The regulators really need to get over themselves and LEARN about this plant. It's not like people are going break off pieces of their deck and try to smoke them, for frak's sake!

SOO many uses for hemp, so ridiculous there's so many restrictions on it still. Truly an amazing plant. I tried to find hemp canvas to paint on once and it was impossible to find. I imagine if they can make linen canvas, hemp shouldn't be too hard.

I keep reading about all the hundreds of potential uses for hemp, but what every single article (including this one) fails to mention is how it compares to the products we use today.

This image from the article lists some of the multitude of uses for this amazing plant. But I'm left wondering...

  • Paper products - Any plant can be made into paper, right? How does hemp paper compare to old-fashioned tree paper?
  • Textiles - Is it as durable and comfortable as cotton?
  • Moulded plastics - How does hemp plastic compare to other biological plastics?
  • Body care products - How does it compare to all the other strange plants we put in these products?
  • Construction - Is hempcrete as durable and practical as regular concrete?
  • Livestock feed - Is it as nutritious as other plants we feed our livestock?
  • Nutritional supplements - How does it compare to other supplements?
  • Essential oils - Does it smell good enough that anyone would want it?
  • Food - Is it nutritious? Does it taste good?

(Medicine is one of the few uses I honestly believe this plant has potential for.)

Fort he record: I support legalisation of marijuana and of growing hemp, but I think the debate needs more honesty and more depth. Most of the people advocating hemp legalisation only care about a single use of the plant; smoking it.

Smoking hemp will give you a cough and not much else lol Hemp seeds are great to add to any smoothie!

All in on hemp. Working toward offering this service through my company.

I really like your post friends and your post is very good I am glad to be able to join you thanks steemit friends good for sharing interesting things I can learn from you

Well shoot..sign me up for a hemp house!

how high can you go
