Yes, I see your point. Peasants does have a derogatory tone to it, although it was meant in a somewhat metaphorical sense. The power has always belonged to the masses/peasants. The monarchs, or in modern terms government, have only retained control through the illusion that they are the ones that possess the power.
Commoners is a much better word for what I was trying to convey though.
