Drenar un excedente, en urbanismo se define como la recolección y desalojo a través de un sistema de tuberías, y obras complementarias de un volumen de aguas superficiales, también llamadas “aguas grises”.


El complejo sistema de drenajes de un espacio consiste en el desalojo de un volumen de agua generalmente producto de las lluvias que deben ser conducidos a través tuberías, alcantarillas, “bocas de sapo” hasta los receptáculos definitivos generalmente lagos, lagunas, ríos, caños, quebradas o el mar.


De extrema importancia para el hombre debido a que forma parte del ciclo natural del agua desde la precipitación, percolación, escorrentía, almacenamiento y evaporación.


Un mal drenaje se traduce en inundaciones, pérdidas materiales, perdidas de horas hombres, problemas de contaminación y salubridad.


Las tuberías utilizadas en los drenajes urbanos son de mayor diámetro que los utilizados en aguas servidas por cuanto entra en juego las condiciones de la naturaleza en las precipitaciones (lluvias) y las áreas superficiales de captación y más aun cuando han dejado de ser suelos descubiertos para convertirse en espacios de concreto o asfalto aumentando los valores de escorrentía y velocidad de las aguas.
