xronologiya tarixi hadisələrin ardıcılığını öyrənən elmdir.
yunanca xronologiya zamanı öyrənirəm deməkdir. tarixi hadisələri sıra ilə, ardıcıllıq ilə öyrənən elm sahəsi həm də tarixi hadisənin baş verdiyi ictimai, siyasi mühiti şərh edir.
məsələn, ərəblərin azərbaycanı işğal etməsi tarixi hadisəsini dövrün tarixçiləri şərh edir və ictimai, siyasi mühiti dəyərləndirirlər. biz bunları tarixi mənbələrdən öyrənirik. xronologoya elmi təkcə tarixdə deyil, bütün sahələrdə keçərlidir. məsələn ədəbiyyatda hər hansı bir ədibin yaradıcılığını araşdırsaq onun yazdığı əsərləri qruplaşdırırıq, yazılma tarixinə görə sıralayırıq. burda da bizim köməyimizə xronologiya elmi gəlir.əgər yazılma tarixi yoxdursa əsəri oxuyarkən müəyyən zamanı anlamaq olur. "illəri müəyyən olmayan əsərlər" kimi qeyd etmək olar.
